IBS Director Steve Granick Named to American Academy of Arts and Sciences

Steve Granick, the IBS Director of the Center for Soft and Living Matter at the Institute for Basic Science (IBS) has been elected to the 236th class of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. It is one of the oldest and most prestigious honorary societies and a leading center for policy research in the United States. Members have included Albert Einstein, Winston Churchill, and Nelson Mandela. Granick joins 213 new members including the world’s most accomplished scholars, scientists, writers, artists and civic, business and philanthropic leaders.

It is the second time that Granick’s international credibility as a leader in the field of polymer physics and chemistry is recognized with membership in the world’s most prestigious academic organizations. He was elected to the U.S. National Academy of Sciences (NAS) in April 2015.

Before coming to IBS, Granick spent 30 years at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (USA), most recently as the Racheff Chair of Materials Science and Engineering, Professor of Chemistry, Professor of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, and Professor of Physics and Biophysics. He founded the IBS Center for Soft and Living Matter in 2014. His research focuses on understanding fundamental materials processes and developing new ones. Granick’s IBS research group is currently working on self-assembly of novel, specially-designed colloidal particles; phospholipid assemblies and nanoparticle-membrane dialogue; active matter and living cells; and properties of single molecules especially macromolecular.

As one of few scholars accomplished in not only polymer physics but also chemistry, Granick was also honored with both the Polymer Physics Prize awarded by the American Physical Society in 2009 and the National Award in Colloid and Surface Chemistry awarded by the American Chemical Society in 2013.

“There are many people who deserve this. I was one of the lucky people. It is especially good for people who work with me because it will open new possibilities for them. It also becomes the responsibility for us here at IBS and UNIST to do even better work here in Korea,” Granick said.

Founded in 1780, the Academy is one of US’ oldest learned societies and independent policy research centers. It has served as an advocate of civil dialogue, scholarship, and useful knowledge, convening leaders from the academic, business and government sectors to respond to the challenges facing – and opportunities available to – our global society. The current membership includes more than 250 Nobel laureates, as well as more than 60 Pulitzer Prize winners.

The new class will be inducted at a ceremony on October 8, 2016, in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
